Privacy Policy
Kristóf Mészáros operates the Overscript mobile application (the “App”). This page explains what personal data the App collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Overscript does not show ads, does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and does not sell your data.
1. Information we collect
A. Account information
You can use Overscript without an account. When you open the App, it creates an anonymous identifier so features that need one keep working. That identifier is not tied to your name or email.
If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google, we receive:
- A unique user identifier (User ID)
- Your email address. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose Hide My Email, we receive a private relay address instead of your real one.
- Your name, if the sign-in provider shares it
We use this information only to sign you in, show your profile in the App, and keep your synced scripts with your account.
B. Scripts
Scripts are stored on your device. While signed in, you can choose individual scripts to sync with your Overscript account. Only the scripts you choose are uploaded, together with their title, collection, favorite status and one previous saved version. They are stored in Google Cloud Firestore so you can open them on your other devices. We do not read, analyze, monetize or sell your scripts. Scripts you don’t choose to sync never leave your device.
C. Video and audio recordings
- Camera and microphone: used only to record video and audio while your script is shown.
- On your device: recording, playback, trimming and exporting all happen on your device. Recordings are stored in the App on your device and are excluded from device and iCloud backups. They are never sent to our servers. They leave your device only when you save them to Photos or share them yourself.
D. Captions
- On-device transcription: when you choose Generate captions, Overscript turns the recording’s speech into text using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. The audio and the text stay on your device. They are never sent to us, to Firebase, or to any analytics or crash-reporting service.
- Language downloads: the first time you caption in a language, iOS may need to download Apple’s speech model for it. Overscript asks you first. The download comes from Apple through iOS. Overscript sends it no audio or text.
- Storage: saved captions (their text, timing and style) are kept with the recording in Overscript’s library on your device. Unsaved edits are kept in a file on your device until you save or discard them, so they aren’t lost if iOS closes the App. Like your recordings, captions are excluded from device and iCloud backups. They are deleted when you delete the recording or the App.
- Sharing: captions leave your device only when you export them, either burned into a video you save to Photos or share, or as a subtitle (.srt) file you share. The app or service you share with then handles the file under its own policy.
E. Subscriptions
Overscript Pro is sold through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes the payment, and we never receive your payment details. The App checks with Apple whether your subscription is active.
2. Service providers
Overscript uses these services to provide its features:
- Firebase Authentication (Google): creates the anonymous identifier and handles sign-in.
- Cloud Firestore (Google): stores the scripts you choose to sync.
- Firebase Remote Config (Google): lets us switch features on or off and announce updates without releasing a new version. To do this, the Firebase SDK uses an app installation identifier.
- Firebase App Check (Google): uses Apple’s App Attest and DeviceCheck to confirm that requests come from the genuine App, which protects your synced scripts from abuse.
- Sign in with Apple and Google Sign-In: used only if you choose to sign in.
- Apple App Store: processes subscriptions.
We do not use analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services. Google processes the data above on our behalf. See the Google Privacy Policy and Apple’s Privacy Policy.
3. Device permissions
The App asks for the following permissions:
- Camera: to record video while you read your script.
- Microphone: to record sound with the video.
- Photos (add only): to save recordings to your photo library when you choose to.
You can change these permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
4. Data retention and account deletion
We keep your account details and synced scripts for as long as your account exists.
You can delete your account at any time in the App: Settings → Account & subscription → Delete Account. This permanently deletes your profile and your synced scripts from our servers, and that account’s scripts on the device. Scripts you created while signed out are kept on your device. If you signed in with Apple, deleting your account also revokes the App’s access to your Apple ID. After deletion, we keep only a minimal account identifier, marked as deleted, so that an older device that is still signed in cannot restore the deleted scripts.
Signing out keeps your account. Deleting the App removes everything stored on your device, including recordings and captions.
You can also ask us to delete your data by emailing [email protected].
5. Children’s privacy
Overscript is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
6. Changes to this privacy policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new version on this page and update the “Last updated” date.
